General Golf Pool Picking Strategy

  • Pick guys that will make the cut
  • Pick guys that others won't
  • Use data, like past results at the tournament, odds, etc. For these picks I used our free U.S. Open Power Rankings tool. I assigned weight to Odds, Recent U.S. Open Finishes, and other recent major finishes. Give it a try to do your own research.
  • Tie your picks into your team name. This isn't strategic, but kinda fun. "Denver Rahmlette" anyone?

Tier 1 Pick: Bryson DeChambeau

Bryson will be popular in tier 1, but not as popular as Scottie. Look for Bryson to repeat as U.S. Open champion this year - he has been knocking on the door the past two majors.

All Tier 1 Pick Options & Data

For the pick options in this article I show odds, tier, and power ranking considering recent U.S. Open (shown in Green) and recent Major finishes (shown in blue) only.

Tier 2 Pick: Ben Griffin

Going against conventional wisdom for tier 2 (or at least against our power rankings model)... I like Ben Griffin here because of his hot hand. T8 at PGA Championship, Win at the Charles Schwab, and a solo 2nd at the Memorial.

Tier 3 Pick: Harris English

With a T12 and T2 in the last two majors, English is a solid pick in Tier 3. He's made the cut at the last 3 U.S. Opens, which is crucial to stay alive in your pool.

Tier 4 Pick: Sam Burns

Burns has competed well in the last three U.S. Opens, and has been making some strong finsihes recently on PGA Tour, posting top 30 or better finishes in his past 5 PGA Tour starts.

Tier 5 Pick: Brian Harman

Harman is a cut making machine in majors, and despite possibly being a popular pick, I think he is the best option in Tier 5.

Tier 6 Pick: Dustin Johnson

DJ hasn't much yet this year having missed the cut at the Masters and the PGA Championship. And you can bet lots of folks will be drafting him. But, does he have the biggest upside in Tier 6??
